If you have not heard of the Siskiyou Crest National Monument you may be alarmed to know that it encompasses approximately ONE MILLION, TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND ACRES, half of which is right here in the Illinois Valley. There are roughly 1400 privately held parcels of land within the proposed monument. You, a family member or friend may be one of those who could lose your property by eminent domain.
This is only one of 17 recently proposed new monuments, locking up a total THIRTEEN MILLION acres, in addition to the approximately 120 monuments currently existing, that include over SEVENTY MILLION ACRES already.
Please take time and write your Commissioners, Representatives, Senators, Congressmen and even The White House in opposition to this monumental land grab.
If you would like further information regarding this type of land-grab or other natural resource use and conservation, please feel free to contact SORA, or attend one of our meetings, held every Monday at 7:30 AM at Elmer’s Restaurant, 175 NE Agness Ave, in Grants Pass.
||Creation of Monuments & Wilderness by Executive Order
||U.S. Rep. Greg Walden
||Monday, January 31, 2011
||Jackson County Courthouse
100 South Oakdale
Greg Walden, our U.S. Congressman for Oregon’s 2nd Congressional Distict, will be holding a press conference on the steps of the Jackson County Courthouse in Medford (100 South Oakdale) at 10:30am next Monday, January 31st.
Congressman Walden plans on introducing a bill to change the Antiquities Act, which currently contains provisions allowing the President the power to create a National Monument merely by signing an Executive Order (without any approval or input by either the House or or the Senate). The proposed bill would take this power away from any sitting president. If it passes the House of Representatives, the bill will go to the Senate for a vote.
The biggest concern to Southern Oregon and Northern California residents (and the people of America who use the public lands) is that Obama will create the Siskiyou Crest National Monument by the stroke of a pen in an Executive Order. He may be tempted to do this just as he leaves office (or anytime without public or congressional involvement since there is a large support from the environmental community who wishes to block up all Federal lands. All presidents desire to leave a legacy and creating the Siskiyou Crest National Monument would provide just the opportunity for President Obama’s legacy.
Please attend this press conference and show up with signs showing your objection to the creation of yet another monument, further restricting public access to and use of thousands of acres of public lands and eliminating yet more jobs and economical stability for the timber industry by eliminating timber harvest on even more public lands. This is our chance to let Greg Walden know that he has the public support in his effort to stop this unfair land grab in our area.
